01

How do I help with sun and heat?

There are several products you can use that help reduce glare and heat. Examples include cellular shades, sun

shades, draperies, shutters and more. The product you choose can be decorative or simple. VBM will help

you choose the right product for your project.

02

How do I measure my window?

Window width (side to side) is always the first number you give. The second is always the height (top to bottom), e.g., 34 x 36 is a window that is 34" wide and 36" top to bottom. This is all you need for quotes. Once you decide to order, have your installation folks measure for accuracy. Window treatments are custom fit so measuring has to be accurate and there is usually a no return policy for quality window treatments.

03

Can I make the window treatments move automatically?

There are many computerized systems on the market and new ones coming out all the time. When you motorize a shade you have ensure the motor can be integrated and with what systems. This is complex and tricky if you are automating your home. Talk to the automation company to note who they can integrate with. We are seeing new phone apps all the time but your window shades have to accept these. Check before buying motorized shades.

04

What is good for a big window/sliding door?

You can use verticals, shades (both manual and motorized), panel on tracks, pleated shades and drapery are just a few options we can offer.

05

Do you make products for an arched window?

Yes, 2 inch faux and 2 inch wood, pleated shades and draperies are just a few options that are available for arched windows.

06

How big of a project can you handle?

We have done from one window to over 1,200 on a single job. These range from a few dollars to over $600,000.

07

Can I link my window treatments to my automation system?

Yes, depending on what you have and whose motor you used. It could be very simple or it may be complicated in some cases depending on what you are doing with what product and what automation system you are using.

08

Can I link my window treatments to my smart phone or computer?

Possibly but you have to have the motors that use this technology and can accept  the signal. It can be done through several ways in your home with other equipment as well. Be sure to talk to your automation installer and if you are getting new window treatments and want to automate to ensure you have the correct motors and controls.  A lot of products already come in remote control and it is much simpler if they do.

09

Can I install the window treatments myself?

Yes, anyone can install their own treatmentsbut there are some treatments that require some special installation. Check with us and we will advise you. Many customers install their own and others would rather our installers take care of the whole thing.

014

Are these safe to have around my kids and pets?

Yes, the following is an excerpt from an article by the Window Coverings Safety Council.

The Window Covering Safety Council urges parents and caregivers to check all windows for potential cord hazards and make the necessary safety updates:

  • Install only cordless window coverings in bedrooms and sleeping areas for young children.

  • Replace window blinds, corded shades, and draperies manufactured before 2001 with products that meet updated safety standards.

  • If replacement is not possible, repair window blinds, corded shades, and draperies manufactured before 2001 with retrofit cord kits, available by emailing windowcoverings.org or calling 1-800-506-4636.

  • Move all cribs, beds, furniture, and toys away from windows and cords. Keep all window pull cords and inner lift cords out of children’s reach. Make sure that tasseled pull cords are short and continuous-loop cords are permanently anchored to the floor or wall. Cord stops must be properly installed and adjusted to limit the movement of inner lift cords.

  • Lock cords into position whenever horizontal blinds or shades are lowered, including when they come to rest on a window sill.

What do I need to know about motorization?

Consumers are increasingly interested in using technology in their homes—to make daily tasks easier; to coordinate their “smart” appliances, media, lighting, and heating/cooling systems; and to remotely control their home’s appearance, for security reasons.

There are many advantages of motorization:

  • Ease: Motorization makes it easier to operate hard-to-reach and wide window coverings. Consumers can control multiple window coverings at once with the simple touch of a button. Motorized blinds or shades are a great addition to current home automation systems.

  • Energy efficiency:  Many people are now more “green-minded” by adopting more energy efficient systems to lower their heating and cooling bills. Motorized window treatments can be programmed to control interior heat gain—they rise and lower at optimum times of day, depending on the season.

  • Safety and privacy: Automatic timers can be used to lower window coverings at night or while away from home, for added home security. Motorization also eliminates cords, which can be a safety hazard for small children and pets.
